God the powerful creator

The majestic opening statement of the Bible lays the foundation: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Everything came from an all-powerful God, “who alone has immortality” (1 Timothy 6:16).

When Moses asked to see God’s glory, he was told:

“No man shall see me, and live ... I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand while I pass by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.” (Exodus 33:20-23)

There is an important point here: men and women can only see where God has passed by. When we look at the natural world around us we see evidence of God as a powerful Creator; when we look into the pages of scripture we see the beauty of His character and purpose in creation.

In Old Testament times the Israelites needed this reminder from the prophet Isaiah:

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.” (Isaiah 40:28)

The message is carried forward into the New Testament. The Apostle Paul, for example, preaching at Lystra, appealed to people to

turn … to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them.” (Acts 14:15)

Our response

The evidence of creation demands the correct response from us all. There is only condemnation for those who “exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25). If, on the other hand, we turn to the living God, we are assured that He is “a faithful Creator” (1 Peter 4:19) for those who keep faith with Him.

“Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth …” (Ecclesiastes 12:1)
