Faith Alive! | Commandments of Christ 6

6. Be ready for his coming

From issue 82 (October 2005)

THERE are plenty of passages that tell us we need to be ready, waiting and watching for the return of Jesus. Matthew 24:44 says “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect”. The parable of the ten bridesmaids shows us that none of them were awake when the bridegroom came, however five of them were prepared with oil in their lamps. This must be our aim – to be prepared for Christ’s return.

Understanding this commandment isn’t a problem. However living this commandment is an enormous challenge for believers. How can you be in a continuous state of readiness? How can we have this thought at the forefront of our minds when we are such forgetful creatures? We need to come up with ways of reminding ourselves that Jesus is coming back and it really could be any time.

The first century church was criticised for stopping work and spending all their time sitting and waiting for the return. Even Paul, a busy apostle, found time to earn his keep. So giving up employment, school, or college isn’t the way. So there must be a way to live our ‘normal’ lives and still be ready at any time for His return. The thing is to be in the world but not of it. Go to work, but don’t get so wrapped up in it that you have no time to spend with your brothers and sisters. Study hard for your education, but not to the detriment of your spiritual wellbeing. Try to get your priorities right.

However this still doesn’t help the more forgetful of us. The most obvious way to remind yourself about your hope is to read your Bible every day. Why not try to learn a verse from the daily readings each day to try and remember for the day? Recite it to yourself while you drive to work. Have little reminders – a post-it note on the fridge, a note on your desk, on the mirror in the bathroom – anywhere that you’ll see each day.

Here are a couple of phrases to try:

  • I want to be in the kingdom of God more than anything else in the world.
  • Jesus is coming – ready or not.

These aren’t original, but they are phrases that people use for just this reason – to help keep themselves constantly ready for the return of Jesus.
